VOCs in Paint: What That New-Paint Smell Is Actually Telling You

 

Repainting a room and then noticing the smell lingers for days afterwards is such a common experience that most of us just assume it's normal. It's worth understanding what's actually causing it.

What It Actually Is

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are a broad group of carbon-based compounds that evaporate easily at room temperature. In conventional paint, they're used as solvents and carriers that help the paint go on smoothly and then evaporate as it dries and cures — which is where that smell comes from.

Why It's On The List

The US EPA notes that VOC levels are consistently higher indoors than outdoors, often by a significant margin, largely because of everyday products like paint. Short-term exposure to higher concentrations can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and research reviewed by the EPA links longer-term exposure to lower-level concentrations with effects on lung function over time. Where It Hides

Conventional oil-based paints, some latex paints, primers, varnishes, wood stains, and caulks. Off-gassing is heaviest in the days and weeks right after application, especially in a room that isn't well ventilated.

What To Use Instead

Where possible, choose paint labelled low-VOC or zero-VOC, keep windows open and airflow going both during and after painting, and give a freshly painted nursery or bedroom extra time to air out before it's slept in.
